Rapper Tory Lanez, real name Daystar Peterson, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting Megan Thee Stallion in a 2020 incident. The sentencing, which was initially delayed to August 8th, was handed down with Lanez receiving a 305 day reduction due to time served.
Judge David Herriford of the Los Angeles County Superior Court granted a 15% credit of 34 days, as well as 40 days of house arrest. Lanez will be filing for bail pending an appeal which will be heard on August 15th, though it is highly unlikely to be granted.
Deputy D.A. Kathy Ta noted the immense power it took for Megan Thee Stallion to come forward with her story after facing public humiliation. Megan Thee Stallion, real name Megan Pete, issued a “final” response in April and reflected on the trauma she had endured.
Prosecutors on the case had sought a 13-year sentence however the maximum sentence Lanez could have received was 22 years and eight months. Lanez was found guilty of all three charges, one count of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, one count of carrying a concealed, loaded and unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and one charge of discharging a firearm with gross negligence.
The incident has been widely discussed in the music industry and has sparked a number of important conversations on gun violence and victim’s rights.
